A shebang in Brandy Station

Writer's picture: Deborah NewmanDeborah Newman

Have you used the expression “the whole shebang”? Well, there was a shebang in Brandy Station. By now you may think this a joke. No…in 1863 the Shebang was located in Brandy Station. It was the Headquarters for the United States Sanitary Commission. The objective of the Commission was to help with the hardships of the soldier’s life and to give comfort to the sick and wounded. It also provided clothing needs and all was given was without charge to the soldier. The photo was taken in November 1863 by James and Alexander Gardner.
